Just picked up "Where the Roots Reach for Water: A Personal and Natural History of Melancholia", by Jeffrey Smith. So far, I like the read. Might tell you more when I've read more... Just thought I'd take a break from reading it and suggest it to yall. ;)

update
Thu, April 10, 2008 - 9:36 AMThe book I recommended (possibly prematurely) ended up only having a small ammount of information on the history of melancholy and its terminology; most of it, by far, was a personal history. This is not to say that it is neccesarily not a good read (I wouldn't know, as I only read out of it the type of information that I was looking for), but I thought that it would have more info on the history of melancholia than it did because of the title. -

Re: update
Thu, April 10, 2008 - 10:41 AMThis is a side recommendation, and not directly 'about' melancholia (although it fictionally deals with themes of 'anhedonia' and chronic 'clinical' depression with exceptional depth), but the book "The Corrections" by Jonathon Franzen was the only thing I looked forward to in the darkest weeks of my winter, because it was so alive, if anyone needs a good distraction in award-winning literature.
